I certainly hope that all of my students are enjoying their break. It is hard to believe that we will be going back to school next Monday. This is a CRITICAL time as we are going to be learning the rest of the material that we need to know for 5th grade and for the SOL Tests! I hope each of you are ready to commit to some hard work, lots of studying, asking questions, and getting ready for what is ahead for the rest of the school year! I hope you all are looking over your Math notes and practicing your skills that we have learned so far! BE READY!!!!

CAREER DAY On Wednesday (November 18th)
Wednesday will be our annual Career Day. Students will have the opportunity to talk to many people from the community and learn about their careers. Make sure you take the time to ask good questions and to really think about the career you would like to do in YOUR future! Now is the time to start thinking about things like that. Where do you want to go to college? How can you start preparing now? What kinds of things do you need to learn? What kind of job do you want when you're an adult?

2nd Nine Weeks Started!
Monday (October 26th) was the first day of the 2nd Nine Weeks. Students received their report cards for the first nine weeks and have now begun working on the next marking period. Students should remember to do all of their homework, spend time studying notes and old papers/tests every night, and should be reading at least 20-30 minutes every night. Parents can schedule parent/teacher conferences by sending us a note a couple of days ahead of time or may call the school during our planning time to set up a time to come in. Our planning time is EVERY day from 8:45-9:30.

Week In Review: August 31-Sept. 4, 2009
Mrs. Appleton's Student of the Week: Marcos
Character Kid of the Week: Ashley
Dudley's Homeroom Helper: Aaron
Barr's Homeroom Helper: Amya
Mrs. Appleton's Helpers:
This week in Math we took our first Multiplication Facts Timed Challenge. Students DEFINITELY need to learn those multiplication facts! All students have a chart with the facts in their binders. STUDY AND PRACTICE! We also learned about Adding Whole Numbers and Fractions and reviewed comparing numbers.
In Reading, my homeroom read "Meeting Mr. Henry." We learned about Cause and Effect and did a couple of activities about that. We reviewed Generalizing and learned new vocabulary words.
Students need to make sure they write down homework on the Homework Charts that are given to them EVERY Monday! I am going to start taking those up and checking them on Fridays to make sure that all homework was written down. Parents may also initial at the bottom each day so that I know you are checking for these sheets at home.

Student of the Week: Tomas
Mrs. Appleton's Monitors/Helpers: Lakeeta and Joshua

News From This Past Week: August 17-21, 2009
1. My Student of the Week: Zedrick
Character Kid of the Week: Aaliyah
Monitors (Homeroom): Tamia and Shareef
Dudley's Helper: Antonel
Barr's Helper: Saud
2. Top 3 AR (08/21/09):
Shareef
Aaliyah
Ray
3. Students NEED to make sure they know the whole number and decimal places. They are struggling with this in Math and we reviewed for the last time today. They all
made models of this to use as a study tool at home. PRACTICE!!!!!!! On Monday we
are moving on to Rounding but expect pop quizzes on place value from time to time!
4. We have had a LOT of students out sick this week. Please remember to cover your
mouths when you sneeze and wash your hands a LOT!!!!! Take care of yourself so we can all be back in the classroom learning and growing together!
5. Students need to remember to read AR books and take AR tests. In 5th grade students are required to get 4 AR points EVERY week! Don't wait until Friday to try to get your points. Work on it a little every day and read books at HOME so you can come in and take the tests in the morning during Morning Work time. Students are given 40 minutes EVERY DAY to read and take AR tests because, "The more you read, the better reader you become." Students who don't have 4 AR points on Friday will lose 5 Team Day Points and if they have ZERO AR points then they lose 10 Team Day Points! Right now they may read books from ANY level, but once we get their Reading levels, then they will only be allowed to read books that on their levels or higher. So take advantage of the chance you have to read some lower level books now.

"Problems of the Day" Start Tomorrow In Math Classes
Tomorrow my Math classes will start having a few review problems to do when they first enter the classroom. At the end of the week, these sheets will be graded. Students who make an "A" for the week will get a sticker on the chart in the hallway. 10 stickers=10 Team Day Points. This is a great way to constantly review material we have covered in class so that students do not forget anything. Students are encouraged to study their Math notes EVERY SINGLE NIGHT so that they are ready for the Problems of the Day.

Promotion Ceremony Practice Started Today!
Today we started practicing for the Promotion Ceremony which will be held on the last day of school, June 19th, beginning at 9:00 A.M. How exciting! Students are reminded to pay attention, stay quiet, and take it seriously. Remember to sing out loud on your songs and follow directions that the teachers give you. This is an important day that we are preparing for. Parents are reminded to be there early on that day so that you can get a good seat in the gym. Students are to wear "Sunday attire" for the ceremony and my leave with their parents after the ceremony. If students plan on leaving with someone besides their parents, they MUST bring us a note telling us who they have permission to go home with that day. Parents, I think you will REALLY enjoy the songs that we have lined up for them to perform for you and there will be lots of awards and recognitions given out! (Click on the video below to see the 5th grade students singing one of their songs for the ceremony!)

Danville Braves Reading Competition
Today we had a visit from The Danville Braves and the mascot, Blooper! It was at an assembly to start a new reading competition! In 5th grade, students are required to read 4 AR books, take the tests and pass them, and then let the teacher know so it can be recorded on the students' bookmarks. Students will then receive their bookmark to take to Sylvan Learning Center where they will receive tickets to a Danville Braves game!!!! They will also be eligible to win other prizes. So let's all get busy!!!!! Please note that the students MUST pass the AR tests and the teachers will ONLY take the tests off ONCE if they do not pass them. Their bookmarks are kept in a pocket chart at the front of the room so they can bring them to me to update. A poster in the hall helps us keep track of how many books each student reads! So......come on 5th graders and READ, READ, READ!!!!

A "Teacher's Basket" For Miss Worsham!
We had a teaching assistant from Averett, Miss Worsham, helping in Math classes for the past few weeks. As a "thank you" for all of her help, the students and I gathered materials to put into a basket for her. Next semester she will do her student teaching before graduating from Averett and becoming a teacher and we wanted to give her some things that she could use in her classroom one day. We FILLED the basket with paper, pencils, highlighters, folders, paperclips, glue, glue sticks, post-it notes, and MANY MANY other things! It was a HEAVY basket and Miss Worsham was so surprised and wanted me to make sure that I told each and every student who contributed to it how much she appreciated such a wonderful surprise! All of the 5th-grade students also signed a card for her! What a wonderful and caring thing for them to do for her! She is going to be an AWESOME TEACHER!!!!!!

BUSY FRIDAY!
Yesterday was a whirl of activity: first we had our Team Day for the 3rd nine weeks which was a lot of fun. We watched BOLT which is a really good movie about a little dog discovering that you don't have to be a super hero to have super abilities and to have people who love you. GREAT THEME! We also played "Dance Dance Revolution" and "Rock Band" and had time to talk with friends, use the computers, eat refreshments, etc. Those who did not have enough Team Day points had to stay in detention, but we hope that EVERYONE will work hard this nine weeks to control their behavior, have homework, and do what they need to do in order to participate in the last Team Day.
Then, we had Family Focus Night last night at Taylor Elementary! Families were invited to play games, eat pizza and popcorn, attend our Book Fair, and just spend time have fun! Overall it was a busy and FUN Friday!!!!!

Things To Remember:
1. SOL Writing/English Tests are Tuesday and Wednesday (March 10 and 11th). Come to school ON TIME and with good attitudes! You can do this and make great scores if you take your time and WORK HARD! Be sure to have an AR book with you to read when you finish.
2. Intersession Forms are due tomorrow! Please make sure they are signed and filled out completely. It will be the last Intersession before SOL Testing so there will be a LOT of review games/activities to help give you some much needed practice!
3. March 27th: Family Focus Night from 5-7. The Book Fair will also be there and your family is invited to join us all at Taylor for a night of fun and games!
4. Please note that March 20th is a FULL DAY OF SCHOOL now. It is NOT a Teacher Workday because we have to make up the snow days we missed last week.
5. As the weather gets warmer, students need to remember that it is NOT summer break and they need to continue to control their behavior and they also need to study harder than ever as we head into the SOL Testing season!!!!! This is NOT a time for goofing off and acting silly.

Some of the students who are having trouble with Division received an invitation to stay after school this Wednesday until 4:15 to review and practice Division (and other skills if we have time). Your forms are due tomorrow (signed by your parents with either YES or NO checked). Your parents will need to pick you up at 4:15 outside of the Annex building. Please remind them to be on time. You are also reminded that you may bring a snack to eat before we get started with tutoring. The school does not provide a snack or buses this year. If your parents cannot pick you up, we can arrange a time during the day (one day at Activity Time) to review. Please come to tutoring ready to WORK and LEARN....it is NOT recess time. This is a time for you to get better prepared for the SOL Math Test that will be in May!

Regular Class On Monday!
We had a very successful Intersession and practiced a lot of skills such as adding/subtracting fractions, simplifying fractions, dividing by two digit divisors, polygons, and many others. Now it is time to get back to the regular school day and finish covering the Math skills for the year. Then, we will have plenty of time to remediate skills and practice before the SOL Test in the Spring. Everyone is reminded to keep studying notes EVERY night for at least 15 minutes or more. Use your old graded papers to review your skills we have covered, and make sure you bring your Math journal to class EVERY day!

Team Day Was Today (2nd Nine Weeks)
Well, today our 5th-grade students had a ball! We had team day! One room had crafts, the Wii, and board games. The other room had Rock Band, more games, and snacks! Those students who are earned 110 points for the nine weeks were able to attend and those who didn't have 110, had detention and worked. We hope to have MORE people next nine weeks! We only had 14 who didn't do homework, broke rules, etc. so maybe next time we won't have any and we can THREE rooms of fun! We start them off at the beginning of the nine weeks with 150 points and give them ways to earn more points, so some had over 200! Others were in the negative numbers!

Funny Polygons Video To Watch
Today in class we talked about Polygons. In 5th-grade you need to know triangles, quadrilaterals (which includes squares, rectangles, kites, rhombus, parallelograms, and trapezoids), pentagons, hexagons and octagons. Here's a funny little video that reviews some of those AND includes some that we don't have to know in 5th grade (such as the heptagon, nanogon, and decagon). Just push the "play" arrow and ENJOY!

HAPPY NEW YEAR: A New Year & New Goals
I am hoping that each of my students will set some new goals for themselves as we start this new year. I know that I have taken time to set some new goals for myself because it always helps to grow and work towards becoming a better person. I know one goal that I hope they have all set is to work hard in class and to make those perfect SOL scores on the tests this year! You guys can do it because you're very talented and smart!!!!! Looking forward to seeing everyone again on Monday!!!!
