Today we went to school until 11:30. The students in Mrs. Appleton's homeroom came in and got to choose their seats. They then worked on little fun activity book and used special holiday pens that Mrs. Appleton had made for them. Some of the girls had brought back the teddy bears that Mrs. Appleton gave them yesterday at the party. We then made jingle bell necklaces that reminded us to "BELIEVE". The Polar Express (kindergarten and first grade students) chugged into the building singing Jingle Bells and we got to see all of them in their pajamas (some of the 5th graders wore their pajamas too; as well as Mrs. Appleton AND Miss Dudley!). We then went to the sing-a-long in the gym with the rest of the school and had a ball. Lunch came next which was a bag lunch in the classroom. Finally, it was time to wish everyone Merry Christmas as we all headed home! See you guys in 2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today was our last day of school and some of the orchestra students that are in my homeroom wanted to perform. They sat up their instruments and had friends hold their music. We really enjoyed hearing their version of Jingle Bells and it was fun to hear the different sounds of the instruments. You guys did a WONDERFUL job and have some amazing talent!

acute triangles
obtuse triangles
scalene triangles
isosceles triangles
equilateral triangles
area
perimeter
volume
circles
radius
diameter
circumference

WHEW! What a lot of things to learn! Study your notes/flashcards every night! Geometry is FUN and it's definitely on the SOL Test!!!!!! ENJOY!!!!

Division Reminders

Some of you do not know your multiplication facts which makes it VERY hard for you to do division. You can still list the multiples of the divisor carefully on your paper by adding and then use that help you divide. For example, if the problem is 325 divided by 5, then you could list the multiples of 5 to help you solve the problem. You would just add 5 each time to get your multiples OR you could take the time to write out a multiplication chart. Over the break, make sure you learn the facts that you are struggling with so that Math will be easier for you! We use multiplication in fractions too!

Some of you need to remember the steps of division:

1. Divide
2. Multiply
3. Subtract
4. Bring down

You just repeat those steps over and over until you finish and have nothing left to bring down. Remember the funny sentence we came up with,
"Dead Monkeys Stink Bad"

YOU CAN DO IT!

Fraction Reminders!

Some of you are not simplifying (reducing) your answers when you add/subtract fractions. If you don't simplify the answers, it is counted wrong!

Some of you also do not change improper fractions to mixed numbers. If you leave it an improper fraction, it is counted wrong!

The SOL Test expects you to simplify and change all improper fractions to mixed numbers. If you need help with this, see me one morning or during Activity. I will be glad to help you one-on-one.

Intercession Was A Big SUCCESS!!!!!!!

Well, we finished the Fall Intercession today. I think that the students who attended got a lot out of it. Many of them commented that they now understood things such as Elapsed Time, Multiplication, Division, Mean, Mode, Median, and Range. GOOD JOB!!!!!!!
Be ready when you come back to start on some NEW STUFF!!!!!! I'm proud of all of you ESPECIALLY those who came to Intercession every single day! We had some fun too in Math playing PIG, MUGGINS, CROSS OUT REPEATERS, MATH MAGIC, etc. See, Math CAN be fun!!!!! Have a GREAT Fall Break and be safe!!! Happy Halloween to all of you who will be out Trick-or-Treating next week!

Do YOU Know Your Equivalent Decimals and Fractions????

A LOT of students do not know these. They will be one of the questions on the Problem of the Day EVERY week until everyone memorizes them! We have put them in our notes AND in our Math Journals. Make it easy on yourself and learn them now. They will help you out!!!!
.10 = 1/10

.20 = 1/5

.50 = 1/2

.25 = 1/4

.125 = 1/8

You should know them the other way around too. For example, if I ask you what is 1/8 equal to in decimal form, you would say ".125". This will make it easier on the SOL test if you have to put numbers in order and they give you some in fractions and some in decimals. You would simply change the fractions to decimals and put them all in order. If they give you 3/4 then you already know that 1/4 is equal to .25 so three of those would be equal to .75. LEARN THEM AND MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF.

Problem Area: Elapsed Time

This seems to be a problem area for a lot of our students this year. Please practice with your notes and old problems. Here is an example:

Kelly leaves home at 9:14 am to go shopping. She gets back home at 1:35 pm. How long was Kelly gone?

First, figure out the whole hours by writing:
Start 9:14 am
10:14am
11:14 am
12:14 pm
1:14 pm
How many hours is that? Do not count the starting time. You should have gotten 4 hours.

Now figure out how many minutes it is between 1:14pm and 1:35pm. You will want to "chunk" the minutes in little bits that you are comfortable working with. Here's one way you can do it:

1:14-1:24 = 10 minutes
1:24-1:34 = 10 minutes
1:34-1:35 = 1 minute
Now add all of the minutes and you get 21 minutes, so your final answer would be:

4 hours and 21 minutes

READ EVERY NIGHT!

My homeroom Reading class is supposed to be reading at least 20 minutes EVERY night and writing it down on their Reading calendar (which is due October 1st). The more you read, the better reader you become. Mrs. Appleton reads every night too. Which book am I reading at this time? It's a new one I just got in on Friday called "China Ghosts" which is about a couple's journey to China to adopt their baby. It's GREAT!!!! Feel free to email me and tell me which book YOU are reading right now and what it is about. You can also click on "comment" right below this message, and leave a comment telling me what you are reading. Everyone will be able to read what you write! ENJOY your books!!!!

Don't Forget Your Homework!

Each teacher in 5th-Grade posts homework every day. Mrs. Appleton has a homework board so no one should forget to write their homework down. Some students are forgetting this! Remember homework is not punishment; it is to give you some extra practice at home so you're ready the next day to learn more!

AR Points

Each 5th-grade student is expected to read EVERY night! Each student should take AR Tests during the week and reach their goal of 4 points. Those who meet this goal will receive a reward on Friday afternoon. Remember, the more you read, the better you become at it. Students may borrow books in Mrs. Appleton's room, the school library, or from home. Students all received their Yearly AR Goals today in Library class from Mrs. Sule. We also have a Class Goal and if our class meets that goal, we will get a PIZZA PARTY! GO 5th-GRADE GO!! Enjoy those books and remember to read some chapter books too as well as fiction AND nonfiction!!!!!!!!! READ READ READ!!!!!!!!

Mrs. Appleton's Classroom

Here are pictures of our classroom. We take pride in our classroom and work very hard to keep it clean, organized, and neat. We keep our materials in our lockers when we're not using them and we LOVE to use the fun group table with the umbrella!

Sarah, Plain and Tall Acrostic Poems

Students wrote Acrostic Poems to describe the main character of Sarah, Plain and Tall. They had to use the letters in her name to start each line and then each line had to describe her personality, her likes/dislikes, or things she does in the story. All of them were very impressive and the students enjoyed decorating their "Sarahs". GOOD JOB!

Make Sure You Know Your Multiplication Facts!

We are getting ready to start on multiplying larger numbers and many many 5th-grade students do NOT know their basics facts (0-12). If you don't know them, you need to make yourself some flashcards and STUDY STUDY STUDY! If you don't know the facts, you're going to have a hard time with the larger numbers AND with division and fractions later. Help yourself and learn them NOW!
